As we take advantage of a beautiful spring weekend day and try to catch up, our failings become all too apparent – but amidst them are beautiful little gems beckoning for some attention from us – do we notice or are we simply busying ourselves from one task to another?

Pulmonaria ‘Diana Clare’ sparkles brightly under late winter sunlight.

Georgia Blue, giving Diana Clare a run for her money. I should have taken more care in cleaning out dead leaves and stems, but these plants are too beautiful not to endure some leaf litter – the brown tint surrounding them only adds depth and dimension!

As March churns away, winter persists despite our best intentions to the contrary! Winter’s brutal temperatures make the transition more difficult for both plants and people, requiring us to relax a bit after having taken on so much already this year. So while we might have been caught off guard and now feel behind in some aspects of gardening, that shouldn’t be considered bad; give yourself grace – that would be what any gardening friend would give themselves too if their gardens resembled mine and they experienced what I am feeling too! What won’t allow is missing out on what this year has already brought – no excuse can exist for that one!

Grape Hyacinth and Chionadoxa are two straightforward yet beautiful perennials that could easily slip under the radar when life gets hectic – make sure not to overlook these gems!

At some point, go outside without your tools! Don’t miss the first round of daffodils due to having only seen their beds covered in debris like twigs, stems and spent leaves; don’t overlook rockcress while searching and destroying winter cress; don’t spend a beautiful day sowing seeds because you are behind schedule – take a walk outside in the sunshine; breathe fresh air and witness beauty that already exists around us; there may even be things you have done that were late, hasteful or costly efforts but today take the opportunity and experience the pleasures that gardening brings us!
